Teen dies in dough machine

TORONTO -- A Toronto teen was crushed to death yesterday when a dough machine he was cleaning was accidentally activated by a panicking co-worker.

 Ivan Golyashov, 16, was cleaning the inside of one of the steel drums at Fiera Foods when he told a co-worker to open the drum door so he could get out, police said.

 The man apparently hit the wrong button causing the door to close at 9 a.m., police said.

"We believe that the youth wanted the door open ... but the door was inadvertently closed," Det. Ralph Ashford said.

In a panic, Ashford said, the co-worker accidentally hit the central spindle button, causing the mixer to start and crush the teen's chest.

Other factory employees came to Golyashov's rescue and freed him from the machine. He was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Golyashov and the other man were contract workers and not employees of Fiera Foods, Ashford added.

Fiera Foods refused comment.

Police investigated the death, but said no criminal charges would be laid.

"I'm satisfied this was just an accident," Ashford said.

The investigation has been turned over to the Ministry of Labour.

At home, a grief-stricken Marina Golyashov blamed herself for her eldest son's death.

"It's my fault," she cried. "I let him work. Children shouldn't work."
